Kaling International

llona Maher is a Team USA Rugby Sevens Bronze Medalist and two-time Olympian, having represented the United States in Paris 2024 and Tokyo 2020. Ilona is a viral sensation across social media for sharing her authentic and witty journey as a professional female athlete to help grow the game of rugby and promote body appreciation. An avid foodie and fashion enthusiast on top of Olympic Athlete, she enjoys entertainment opportunities and sharing her life with her nearly 9 million followers across social media.

Originally from Burlington, Vermont, Ilona received her Bachelor of Nursing from Quinnipiac University, where she led their rugby team to three national championships, and her Master of Business Administration from Keller School of Management. She is known for rocking a bold lip and being unapologetically herself while on the pitch, and is dedicated to helping others learn to love who they are off the pitch. The chance to play and share rugby on the Olympic level has helped Ilona embody her personal mantra and hashtag, "Beast Beauty Brains" and has opened doors for youth outreach. She uses her platforms to promote feeling your absolute best while being your authentic self - all while finding a sport you love. An ambassador for ChildFund Rugby, an organization that uses integrated rugby and life skills to help young people from vulnerable communities across the world overcome challenges, Ilona traveled to Laos to help in their mission of inspiring positive social change.

Following her success at the Paris Olympics, Ilona landed the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, became a contestant on Dancing With The Stars, and was named to both the TIME100 Creators List, TIME100 Next List, Sports Illustrated's 100 Most Influential Athletes, Forbes 30 Under 30, and a USA Today Woman of the Year. Sports Pro Media also named her the #8 Most Marketable Athlete in the World. Ilona additionally took home Runner-Up in the 33rd Season of Dancing with the Stars.

Following her Dancing with the Stars debut, Ilona headed to England to sign a history deal with the Bristol Bears of the Premiership Women’s Rugby League – switching from Rugby 7s to 15s. The news took the rugby world by storm, with her announcement video being watched over 11M times and counting, the team having a record number of tickets sold in the days following, and the Bears having to move multiple matches to larger stadiums to accommodate the massive number of fans coming to watch Ilona play. After her three-month contract, Ilona rejoined Team USA Rugby in preparation for the 2025 Rugby World Cup.

In Spring 2025, Ilona also launched House of Maher, a bold and unfiltered podcast co-hosted with her two sisters – culinary creator Olivia Maher and human rights advocate Adrianna Maher. From spilling tea to swapping stories only sisters could tell, it’s the kind of relatable, girlie talk that invites everyone to join the conversation. The Maher trio dives into growing up together to navigating sports, culture, and life with their signature honesty and wit. It’s family, it’s fierce, it’s House of Maher. Listen and watch new episodes every Tuesday on YouTube and anywhere you get your podcasts.

Continuing in the world of entertainment, Ilona is also set to be the subject of a docuseries being developed by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, Ross Greenburg Productions and Range Sports. Maher will executive produce and star in the series, which will follow her on the field and off as she navigates competing at the highest level, as well as adapting to international fame.

Additionally, while in the midst of USA Rugby training camp, Ilona landed her second feature in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, and then made headlines strutting down the SI Swim Miami Swim Week Runway this past Summer. A few weeks later, Ilona took home a 2025 ESPY Award for Breakthrough Athlete. Her acceptance went viral as she shared, “Strong is beautiful. Strong is Powerful. Strong is Sexy. It’s whatever you want it to be. I hope more girls can feel the way I feel,” and encouraged people to, “Train harder, run faster, put another plate on the bar, and never tone it down.”

Ilona made her Rugby World Cup debut in August 2025, playing in all three matches and putting up a hard fight for the USA. She was additionally a huge contributing factor to world-breaking ticket sales, with the World Rugby Managing Director saying, “Rugby World Cup 2025 didn’t just raise the bar, it’s gone stratospheric.” The RWC Final match became the largest attended women’s rugby match in history with 81,885 fans in attendance. Following the World Cup, Ilona made headlines again when Mattel announced the Ilona Maher Barbie. In the process of creating Ilona’s Barbie, Mattel introduced their first ever ‘muscular body sculpt’. Within 24 hours of announcing Ilona’s Barbie, the news hit over 1 billion impressions and nearly 6 million organic social impressions.

Safe to say, the possibilities are endless for Ilona Maher, and there isn’t a glass ceiling in sight that she won’t be breaking.
